Taking Charge Of Our Own Lives During The Pandemic

I am in the United States and over the past few days I’ve felt very dis-empowered. Covid19 taking more and more lives every day. President Trump claiming he has total power and re-opening America very soon. Watching news constantly to try and find out what I need to plan for. President Trump thankfully putting the responsibility on governors to re-open (I am thankful because we have a sensible governor). Watching Michigan protest the stay-home order. Re-opening of American depends on testing that is not available. The list goes on and I’m sure you’re familiar with at least some of these things.

This morning I made up my mind to take charge of my own reality, which was my stance on this in the beginning, but I got lost when I began to feel controlled at Trump’s statement of total power. It scared me because I do not see him taking anything seriously except the economy and stock market. I do not feel safe doing anything he orders because he goes by his gut, rather than listening to health officials and has even stopped supporting the World Health Organization.

This morning I was getting sucked back into all of the politics, trying to determine where my life was going and then it came to me. It’s time to take charge of my own economy, health and food. I immediately felt better, although this seems like an overwhelming task. But right now with our stay-home order in place and not looking like it’s going to let up soon, I have plenty of time to work at these things and by working at them I will at least feel I’m on my way to having control of my life, rather than being tossed around by the President’s changing whims.

So I thought I’d get on here and blog about it hoping to help anyone that is going through what I am. I realize everyone has different feelings about this – some want to get back to work, some don’t feel safe to go back to work, etc. But with the virus and the government regulations, we don’t have a lot of control over this. We could fight it, but going back to work could mean that the virus spreads rampantly and they have to close again. Why not spend energy on things you can do in your life to help your situation? What can we do for our own economy, health and food, in case these systems collapse?

Here are my ideas for my own life – please comment with your ideas in the comments.

Creating my own economy:

  • eBay and all the other selling platforms are up and going and since most retail stores are closed down, there may be more people shopping online. I have noticed an increase in my sales over the past couple weeks. I realize many places to source (such as Goodwill) are also closed, but you could sell unwanted items in your home for some extra money.
  • Blogging – while you may need thousands of subscribers to make money from ads on WordPress, why not use the time to build subscribers or think of other ways to make money from your blog? eBooks? Art? Classes? Life Coach?
  • There’s many other online platforms and ideas for making money at home – YouTube, Fiver, Patreon. This is something I may research but for now I’m focusing on my blog and eBay.

Focusing on my health:

  • From the beginning of Covid19, I made the decision to only leave home if absolutely necessary. I’ve done all of my grocery and other shopping online and haven’t been in a store or place of business since it started. I’ve always enjoyed being at home and have many things to do, so I’m doing well mentally, even being socially isolated. If I need to talk to someone, I call them. The social isolation can be a little difficult at times, but to me it’s worth it to feel safe and knowing I’m not passing the virus around. I try to focus on doing things I enjoy like gardening, reading, learning and cooking.
  • I’m growing a garden which gives me nutrition, outdoors/sunshine, activity and something fun to do – which is good for health.
  • I’m learning about the nutrition of the produce and herbs I am growing and incorporating that into my life. Imagine the nutrition content of a freshly picked organic tomato from your yard compared to a tomato grown thousands of miles away with chemicals. Imagine if you had a lot of produce growing in your yard – the health, activity and happiness it would give you.

Focusing on my own food:

  • Here is the garden idea again. What if the food system collapses? They say it’s in good shape and maybe it is but we really don’t have any idea how this is going to play out. Why not grow a garden just in case?
  • Chickens. I’m thinking about figuring out how to build a coop for chickens and the eggs will be a great addition to my garden. The chickens would also help the garden with their scratching and manure.

These are my own personal ideas. I can think of a lot of other ideas but this is what I’m focusing on for now, building on each one. What are your ideas?

  1. Dear Monica, what a positive approach. Rather than being anxious about what you cannot control, you are looking and taking action on what you can.

In Canada we are very aware of what goes on in the USA, more so than vice versa in my opinion. I am hoping that sensible heads will prevail in your government so that a second wave of infections and deaths will occur in the USA as a result of opening up too soon or too swiftly.

In both our countries restarting the economies is critical but not at the cost of undoing the sacrifices made already and having to start all over.

  2. This is a really uplifting post, Monica, and it seems like you are massively b working on yourself through this time. I think I could take a leaf out of your book and work on growing a small veg garden to live more independently and sustainably. Thanks for this idea.

  3. Stay safe Madam.. In such times or otherwise, it is always advisable to have a robust immunity system. Have as many or much of them as possible, especially citrus fruits, turmeric, black pepper, garlic, onions, ginger, etc. Keeping mental spirits high is also important, and the best way to do so is doing what you like, sitting at home.. 😊
Take Care Madam. This virus too shall die just like smallpox, very very soon.

    1. I also like your recommendations for building a healthy immune system. This is something I have followed most of my life, so I know it works❤️

Staying healthy is something no one should ever take for granted under any circumstances, with or without virus..

  4. The moment you choose to disconnect from politics, the moment you choose to be free. Choose your own reality. I find that following negative things like the media (most of it) makes me feel more negative. Yes, the COVID-19 stats are scary, and I am surprised by the number of cases in the US… Canada has much lower incidence of COVID-19. I follow worldwide stats to get a bigger overview of how the world is coping. I look at objective information, and although the stats are scary, the cases are increasing in a predictable way.

All that we can do is take proper precautions and do our part by social-distancing, hand-washing etc. and at the end of the day, we have to be OK that we did everting we could do. We have no control over what’s happening in the world, how many people are getting sick, and their current situations. All we can do is control what we can control, and try to make peace with that. 🙇‍♀️

    1. Hi Hilary! I totally agree that the moment we disconnect from politics is the moment we choose to be free. Media too. I am working on only watching the facts of what is going on. Otherwise working on being positive and doing what I can do to be stronger in a time like this. Being upset about the news and politics helps nothing. I always love your comments 🙂

      1. Tbh I had to log out of the WP app on my phone because the majority of the time I spent using my phone was related to the app. One little switch has given me more time in my day to focus on health and wellness. 🧘‍♀️🌱

Unfortunately, it was nothing but negativity on the news today but I got the news from my husband and my mom. One way or another, I will find out the important news without directly following the news. Thank you – I enjoy talking to you too! 😊

      2. I hear you. I’ve had to cut my time back on WP also, due to some other projects, but hoping to get back soon because it is one of my goals. Now that I have the time, I have so many goals that I’ve wanted to spend more time on but didn’t have the time for. Trying to find a way to balance/prioritize it all.

Yes, we hear the news one way or another. I seem to get looped in every morning even though it’s not my intention – but I’m getting better each day and recognizing that it’s affecting how I could be spending my time.

  5. What a lovely post! Truly! Now, as a diplomats wife, I couldn’t possibly comment about Trump (!) however, you’re absolutely spot on about taking control of your own situation. I love your ideas … I’m personally slap-bang in the middle of Manhattan so don’t have a garden, but if I did, and being a gardener, I’d be right there with my carrots, chickens and potatoes! For sure! I loved your post. Happy gardening! Katie x

    1. Hi Katie! I understand why you can’t comment about Trump. I am going to do my best to let it all go and do what I can for myself and loved ones. I feel for you in the location you are in. I do have to say that I love your governor and how he has stepped up to the plate to keep everyone as safe as possible. Our governor has done the same. Actually most governors have done that but I really feel for the New York governor and residents. <3<3<3
