I Got An Entire Outfit for $32 At Goodwill

My daughter and I went thrifting last night at Goodwill.  I came home with an entire outfit and a pack of gum for a total of $32 (that includes tax).  The outfit included a pair of Ugg-style boots, a pair of Hue jeggings, a Paper + Tee plaid shirt and a below-the-tush Liz Claiborne warm/thicker cardigan.  All in great condition with hardly any wear.  I’m pretty sure the cardigan alone (or the boots) would have cost at least $32 new.

I actually paid a little more than I normally would at a thrift store.  I can get pretty tight when shopping used, especially donated used, but I just got my income tax refund so loosened up a bit, lol.  A lot of people are complaining that Goodwill’s prices are getting outrageous and I can see their point, but we can still save money, especially if we shop the tag sales.  The cardigan I bought last night was originally priced at $9.99 but it had an orange tag so I got it for 50% off.  Red tags were only .99 cents.  I unfortunately didn’t find anything I wanted with a red tag.

I really enjoy the variety in thrift store.  I see so many unusual things, sometimes finding treasures.  Two times I bought a pair of designer boots that I paid less than $10 for and sold them on eBay for $75 and $90.

The pandemic brought a lot of awareness to me about climate change, food shortages, how quickly our hospitals could colapse and more. This has sent me on a mission of becoming self-sustainable, empowered and working to help heal the earth. That is what the focus of this blog has become. The main way I'm working at this is through building a food forest and documenting as much as possible in hopes to inspire others. The more of us that do this, the more it will help heal the earth. When we buy produce from the grocery store, it was grown through monoculture, and that leads to use of chemicals that goes onto our food and into our planet, destroying soil. If we grow our own through permaculture (a food forest), we give the soil health. We also give ourselves health by growing organic foods and herbs that contribute to our health.   1. Sounds like you found excellent bargains, and had fun too.
    My approach to clothing is a little different, but also thrifty, in that I buy good quality clothing but wear items for years. My favourite blue blazer is from 2001.

  3. Living in the UK we have charity shops which I guess are like your thrift stores and one thing that I have noticed when I look around with my partner, she loves looking and even buying n occasion is definitely the variety of items even some designer labels.
    I personally like looking at the books and often bring home the odd title, I enjoy reading about political history and biographies of world leaders in particular and books on self development.

  5. I absolutely love thrift stores! Most of the jeans I now own are from thrift stores, and they are all name brand, and in good condition when I bought them. Jeans are so expensive otherwise. Some of my absolute favorite thrift store finds were a pair of Oakley sunglasses (unscratched) for 54 cents, and a Michael Kors purse for $6! Saves so much money. 🙂

    1. Wow, those are great deals! Probably 98% of my wardrobe is from thrift stores, lol. I really like the Goodwill Outlet too because it’s so cheap paying by the pound for clothes, and if something doesn’t fit I’ll just sell it on eBay 🙂

  7. I love shopping at “a second look stores”, unfortunately there are non of these close enough to visit in the area of Toronto where I live. So my shopping sprees are not very often and not much fun.😊

  8. I fell in love with thrifting ♥️ thrifting means so much to me more than just cheap clothing. I acknowledged that I’ve found the most passionate and most positive people when circled in a thrifting environment. All of us ought to bring life again to the items thrown away. We get the equal amount of joy when we see something so unique! It’s a blast!

    1. I completely agree! For years, thrift stores have inspired me. Seeing something with a rough finish that I could re-paint, using a vintage sewing basket to organize household things, art to look at and possibly buy – the list goes on. I appreciate your comments and visit! 🙂

    I haven’t shopped in thrift shops (lately most of my shopping is in my own closet), but as a climate change worrier, I think they serve the additional positive role of recycling—that’s got to be a plus.

      I completely agree that thrift stores have the benefit of recycling, saving many items from going to the landfills. Such an important point I wish I had thought to include in this post.

  11. My daughters are always the ones who get me thrifting. Otherwise, I’d probably never go shopping for clothes at all. Then I end up buying more than they do. It takes me a while to find something I like that fits, but then I figure it would take me a while to find something I like that fits me at Macy’s, too, so …

    1. I really relate to what you say. Usually when I end up at a thrift store it’s because my daughter wants to go. She’s 28 now and it’s only been over the past year that she’s taken a liking to them. I really enjoy thrifting, but don’t really like going by myself, never have a huge need for anything there and really appreciate the time that I do have at home.
